The Yowlumni Pack

Pack Status: Active. Designated in Summer 2023.

The Yowlumni Pack was confirmed in Tulare County in July 2023 after CDFW received sightings and images from both the public and environmental consultants working in the area. The pack utilizes a home range in the Giant Sequoia National Monument in Tulare County, with notable presence on the lands of the Tule River Tribe. The pack’s territory is the farthest south in California of any confirmed pack in modern history. They are located 200-300 miles south of California’s other known packs.

The pack consists of breeding male LAS24M (from the Lassen Pack’s 2020 double litter) and breeding female YOW01F (a direct descendant of OR7). The breeding pair had six pups in 2023 and seven pups in 2024.

YOW01F, the breeding female; YOW03F, a yearling female; and YOW06M, a yearling male, have all been collared by CDFW. The pack is the seventh known family of wolves to have become established in California since wolves returned to the state in 2011.

In late 2024, but not reported until early 2025, sarcoptic mange was detected in the pack. Two mortalities were recorded during the first quarter of 2025 and are currently under investigation. Since the 2025 first quarter report indicates that only the adult breeding female, YOW01F, is collared, this may mean that the two mortalities were the other two collared pack members, YOW03F and YOW06M.  In spring 2025, BEY03F, an adult female from the 2023 Beyem Seyo litter, was collared and confirmed to be travelling with the Yowlumni Pack.
