The Ice Cave Pack

Pack Status: Active. Designated in 2024.

In 2023, individual wolves were detected at several camera traps near Lassen Volcanic National Park (LVNP). These wolves were later confirmed to be a pack in August of 2024, after USFS cameras detected two adults and two pups south of LVNP. Collar data suggest the Ice Cave Pack occupies areas of eastern Tehama, western Plumas, western Lassen, and eastern Shasta counties.

The 2024 breeding pair for the Ice Cave Pack was confirmed as WHA09F and WHA07M, both from the Whaleback Pack, through genetic analysis of a pup that died from a vehicle strike in 2024.

It is thought that WHA07M left the pack after breeding in 2024. Genetic analysis in fall 2025 detected a new breeding male, ICE03M, and a total of six pups (one female and five males). In August 2025, ICE04F, a female pup from the 2025 litter, was captured and collared, as well as ICE08M, who was too small to collar.

An additional adult, WHA43M (unknown litter year, Whaleback pack) has also been recorded in the pack.
