Pack Status: No longer active. Designated in 2021.
The Horseshoe Pack was a pack founded by the traveler, OR30. OR30 is a male wolf that was collared in February 2015 in the Mt. Emily area. He was born into the Snake River Pack, but dispersed from his family and began traveling with another wolf in the former range of the Umatilla River Pack.
In 2017, he paired with a female wolf and they had two pups, but she unfortunately passed away in October 2017.
He then dispersed from the area in January 2019, and was photographed cooling off in a pond in the Wenaha territory in June 2019 (see below). In early 2020, OR30 was observed with another wolf in the Mt. Emily WMU. The new pair produced only one pup that survived to the end of the year and was not counted as a successful breeding pair.
In 2021, there were eight wolves documented in the family. OR30 and his mate produced five pups that survived to the end of the year, counting them as both a breeding pair and a pack. They were then designated as the Horseshoe Pack.
In 2022, the department killed a non-breeding adult male in October and a yearling female and juvenile male from the pack in November. Reproduction was documented in 2022, however, no pups were counted during the winter count, so the pack was not considered a breeding pair. Three wolves, including OR30, were documented during the winter count.
In 2023, OR30 dispersed from the Horseshoe area into the Five Points Pack. A new pair of wolves was documented using the Horseshoe territory during the winter count, and the pack was considered to have disbanded.
